Many readers will be aware of the story currently doing the rounds about the conman who managed to convince thousands of Japanese women that sheep were in fact a rare breed of poodle.

It's a hoax.

But the fact that it has been taken up so widely - including, I might add, by the BBC's Have I Got News For You - does serve to illustrate that when it comes to Japan people in the West will believe anything.

  1. People? Anyone in particular?

I don’t think it’s anything specific to Japan. They could have picked most anywhere bar New Zealand and it’d probably have got a good run.

  2. Interesting point.  We’re forever hearing odd stories coming out of the US or Germany.

I do feel though (and it’s only a feeling) that purportedly true stories coming out of Japan have a peculiar quality to them.

  3. Thinking about it, perhaps Japan is a bit of a special case. A little knowledge being a bad thing. Places we know sod all about, South America, much of Africa, central Asia, we discount because, well, no one can be that daft. But the Japanese, we know just enough about them to know that they’re are a bit nuts.
