To our Chinese readers (who celebrate it, which realistically means those in Taiwan and not necessarily all of them) - happy Double Ten.

  1. It’s more celebrated in the north of Taiwan than in the south where I live. Here most people just ignore it - a bit like St George’s day.

Double ten celebrates the establishment of the Republic of China, but here in the South the sense of affiliation is more to “Taiwan” than to the R.O.C and many people still yearn for de jure independence and resent the post-1945 immigrants who dominate the Chinese Nationalist Party and only speak Mandarin.

I’m largely with the southerners, but not without caveats of my own.
