Beijing not Peking; Newcassell not Newcastle; Me-hi-co not Mexico.

Paris not Paree; Vienna not Wien; Dublin not Baile Ath Cliath.

  1. There never was such a place as ‘Peking’. It is written in Wade-Giles Mandarin transliteration system, in which ‘pe’ is pronounced ‘bei’ and ‘king’ is pronounced ‘jing’.

‘Beijing’ was always the correct pronunciation, but no one told the rest of us!
