Against unemployment benefit

I am against unemployment benefit because:
- it involves the state spending money which involves taxation - which I am against
- (depending on the level) it discourages work

Questions
- But if you get rid of unemployment benefit won't that lead to people starving? On this, I am not quite sure what I think. I sure as hell don't want to see people starving. It's just I am not sure whether the solution lies in leaving things to civil society eg charities and people going and getting jobs or whether a Poor Law of the 19th Century type might not be a better bet.
