Japan National Rail (JNR) was the name of Japan's nationalised railway operator from 1949 to its privatisation in 1987.

On the upside

It:

  • seems to have run a reasonably competent service
  • built the Shinkansen (bullet train lines)

On the downside

It:

  • made huge losses
  • suffered from a succession of strikes
  • was less efficient than its private sector equivalents
  • suffered from more overcrowding than its private sector equivalents
