Before 1914 Edwin A Pratt wrote a couple of books (The case against railway nationalisation and Railways and nationalistion) which are very similar in which he compared Britains then-private railways with the nationalised railways in other countries.

He found that the nationalised railways experienced:

  • more strikes
  • losses
  • worse service

He also found that nationalisation rarely achieved its aims - largely because it had so many.

There was even the example of Australia's nationalised railways which had succeeded in establishing a system with three different track gauges.
