Reflections: The Fare Scare

Tim Hall gets hot and bothered about a report in the Times that claims that the government is thinking about granting train operators much more freedom when it comes to setting fares. Tim thinks this is a bad thing.

My take:

  • Fare control is a bad thing so it follows that fare freedom is a good thing
  • Tim is wrong to say that fares have gone up. Some have, some haven't. Last time I looked into it they had come down.
  • I don't think Ben Webster (the reporter) is an "anti-rail loon" as some (not Tim) have suggested. In my experience he is the best transport reporter on any of the broadsheets
  • I am a bit puzzled why Tim thinks that a "Byzantine" fares scheme would be convenient for the operator. Complexity is expensive for suppliers and customers alike
