It seems to me that those things predominantly run by the private sector work and those run by the state don't.
Things run by the state:
- National Health Service
- State education
- Criminal justice system
- Housing
- Railways
Things run by the private sector:
- Shops
- The Internet
- Travel
- Cars
Things run by the state are characterised by:
- Queues, delay, overcrowding and short supply
- Poor quality
- Lack of choice
- crumbling buildings and other structures
- waste
Things run by the private sector are characterised by:
- High quality
- Good supply
- Lots of choice
- Cleanliness
- Good aesthetics

- Railways? I thought they were in the private sector? Yes, but the state still runs the show
- Ah, but the NHS etc is underfunded.
- Housing? But isn't that all in the private sector? Indeed it is, but planning and regulation aren't
