The story in the Telegraph is about a planner and a builder who think that the government's policy of building more flats is wrong and that we should instead start building on green field sites. They think it is wrong because they don't think people like living in flats and because it leads to the building of fewer and ever smaller dwellings

My Take

  • I think they are right to say that current planning laws have led to the building of ever-fewer and ever-smaller properties
  • I think this is probably a bad thing. All things being equal it would be better if we could live in larger properties for the same money or the same properties for less money
  • While I am pretty sure that most people would prefer to live in houses in the suburbs that's probably not true of everyone. Some people prefer flats in the cities
  • This whole argument is in and of itself wasteful and yet another reason to scrap all planning
